Chamomile Tea May Help Calm Stress
Chamomile Tea, from the chamomile herb, may be used as a medicinal herb and is one of the oldest garden herbs today.
A low growing plant and often planted on paths as it was meant to be walked on to release the fragrance has the very distinct smell like apples. The "gorund apple" is what the ancient greeks called it In olden days and it was thought to help the overall health of the garden and if a plant was sickly, they placed chamomile near it. Nine times out of ten, the sickly plant recovered. The entire plant is of use, but the main medicinal use is the flowers, while the other parts are used in the manufacture of herb beers.
Chamomile is used as tonic and antispasmodic. The preparations are an infusion, extracts, and oil. The infusion is made by adding 1 oz. of flowers to 1 pint of boiling water. This was popularly know as chamomile tea and was used to calm hysterical and nervous women. It has a soothing, sedative effect and is harmless to use. It should always be prepared in a covered container to prevent escape of the steam. It has been used when combined with ginger and alkalies, to treat indigestion, heartburn, and loss of appetite.
The chamomile herb is also used topically. The flowers are crushed and mixed with poppies as a poultice to reduce swelling and inflammation. While the whole herb is often used to make herb beers, it may also be made into a lotion for external application in toothache or ear ache. Adding chamomile to the bath is said the reduce weariness and ease pain.
Wild chamomile likes a sunny location and dry sandy soil. The double flowered chamomile prefers a moist loam. Chamomile plants may be sown by seed in May.
To increase the stock of plants, you can use the ‘sets,’ or runners of an old plant. Each plant produces 12-14 sets with some producing as many as 25-50. The older plants may be divided in March and planted about 18 inches apart. It is best to hand weed the young plants as using a hoe may destroy them. You won’t need to do anything else until they flower and then the picking will begin.
When you’ve had a bad day, think about a soothing cup of chamomile tea and throw some into your bath for good measure. The herbalists would tell you that you will be relaxed and pain free after that. You can find the tea in most grocery stores and other chamomile herbs from herb shops or online.
