A Herbal Remedy For Most Any Problem
Most people have been using a herbal remedy of some kind since the beginning of time. Herbal medicine is also known as traditional or folk medicine and is based on the use of plants or plant parts to heal or remedy medical conditions. Some healers learned about the use of plants through observing animals. They noticed that sick animals often gravitated towards bitter herbs when they were ill. Something they would not normally have eaten. We have all observed dogs eating grass and some people believe that it is to relieve an upset stomach. Many prescription medications we use today are derived from plants.
The ancient Greeks and Romans made use of plants and wrote the first treatise on the use of medicinal plants and their properties. The Chinese used plants extensively and use them to this day for healing. Ayervedian healers used turmeric as early as 1900BC. During the middle ages monasteries often contained large herb gardens and the monks were sought out as a source of healing remedies. These days herbs and plants are used almost exclusively in non-industrialized societies.
While many people believe that natural remedies are always safe alternatives that may not be so. Remember, prescription drugs are sometimes derived from plants and most carry some side effects. The same is true of herbal remedies. Natural does always mean that something is perfectly safe to use. When considering an herbal remedy, it is important to clear it with your doctor, especially if you are taking prescription medicines as well. A skilled herbal practitioner may guide you to products that are safe to use.
Herbs are in use today in a variety of products from shampoo to face creams. There are even lines of non toxic herbal cleaning products. People today are very concerned about what they put into their bodies or the environment so it’s likely that the use of herbal products will increase. Spas and retreats use a variety of herbal treatments, such as facials, body scrubs and herbal cleanses.
Since herbal products are not regulated by the FDA in the same manner as prescription drugs, care should be taken when choosing one. The FDA monitors safety after the product is on the market, but does not regulate manufacturing practices. Choosing to buy herbs from a certified organic grower may ensure that you are getting exactly what is on the label. Some herbs today are on the verge of extinction due to over harvesting and the destruction of natural environment. The organic growers are working hard to correct this situation.
Scientific studies on herbal remedies are being done and many physicians today are beginning to realize the value of some herbal treatments. They may use a combination of traditional and herbal remedies to treat some medical conditions. Herbal practitioners are more often referred to as guides or teachers, but they are usually well versed in the use of herbal remedies. The jury is still out on the value of some herbal treatments and the best idea is probably to proceed with caution.
